My two cents - it's worth little more

Like its newer cousin which I unfortunately ordered at the same time - I found this book boring. Too many of the questions were really easy - and it wasn't because I'm too smart for the book. When you check the answers, quite a few of them indicate that 80%-100% of Mensans got the questions correct. On top of that nearly half the book is devoted to trivia and vocabulary. With these you either know the answer or you don't - there's no intelligence involved - only familiarity.

I assumed this book would entertain me for a day. I hoped it would entertain me for a weekend. Instead it bored me for a little over an hour as I took the quizzes. If you're looking for tests of logic, reasoning, and mathematics skills then this book will be of minimal interest to you.

A "Prepper" book that actually has something new! One of the best I've read.

This is one of the best thought out and put together books on why and how to prepare that I have seen, and I've read a LOT of books. I was hesitant to purchase this one (since I have read so many) because it seems, in the preparedness realm, there is nothing new under the sun. I'm happy to say that this book broke that mold. Having been taking measures to look after my family and be as self sustainable as possible for several years now, I DID find new and helpful information in this book as well as some considerations I had not thought of. Excellent resource. I am seriously considering purchasing a second copy for my parents.

**I want to add, the book is broken up into two parts, but one volume. This is confusing when you look at the first table of contents and realize it only goes halfway through the book. After that, you find the second table of contents in the middle of the book and have an "AHA" moment and from there your thinking becomes "Wow, This was money well spent!". The first part of the book goes over all of the reasons why we should prepare and really helps inform you in a detailed (not not overwhelmingly detailed) manner to be able to state your case and have confidence in what you are doing. The second half is your huge resource of how to prepare, what to purchase, where to get it, why you need it, etc. The list of items for barter made far more sense than any list I've seen to date. All in all, this is truly the best thought out book I've seen.

The only book you'll need that combines both the "why" and the "how-to" after our next crisis...

Really enjoyed this book. Well written, with the first half focusing on some of the potential causes of America's (or the world's) next crisis. The second half provides practical prepping "how to's". There is a great summary at the back for things to "hoard" and barter. This is the kind of book that you can read a chapter or two, try to incorporate what the author is saying, and then come back again to learn more. I'm not a big prepper, but the more time goes on the more I do believe something big will happend (most likely either a financial meltdown due to our debt, or an EMP). Note: The author is a Christian and isn't apologetic; he makes the comparison between our times and the time of Noah and the arc. Like the title, love the book!

Troubling, But Necessary

I've been reading Michael Snyder's blog, The Economic Collapse, for years and I'm so grateful to him for all the work he's done to educate millions of us around the world. The global economy could unravel over the next few years and many people are going to be in a state of shock because they never believed the warnings.

A Masterpiece on Hung Gar Kung Fu

This is a beautiful book and highly recommended to practitioners of Hung Gar. It's about 250 pages long, beautifully bound and illustrated (many in full color) and well worth the $50 asking price. Contents are as follows:

Preface/Foreword/Introduction (~10 pages of background on Lam Cho and the book)
Part one: Background and History (~50 pages tracking the history of Hung Gar)
Part two: Techniques and Training (~30 pages of general hung gar techniques; ~90 page detailed manual on the entire gung gee form; ~30 pages of two man drills and applications using techniques from gung gee -- all in great detail and well illustrated)

A very beautifully made and detailed book

A very beautifully made and detailed book, certainly the best I've seen on Gung Gee. Perhaps a bit too much of it is dedicated to tributes and memorials. I wish that the pages describing the form itself had some more detail on applications... but this is true of pretty much every CMA book I've ever seen. The pictures here, though, are more detailed and clear, and go to lengths to show details of transitions that are missing in other books.

Awesome! In-depth, and engaging, top class professional. I have been studying martial arts since my childhood years, and a manual like this only comes along once in a great while. The form is a cornerstone of the martial art, and it's depiction of the techniques is easy to follow, illustrative, and done by the best person to base your form off of in the style. Covers application and plenty of background for history fans, and a glossary of terms, all in a very classy package.

Couldn't stop reading!
If you like dystopian stories, this is for you. In the world that Emme lives in, everyone has to go through Recruitment when they turn seventeen. Well, it's voluntary... sure it is. And if you don't make it through the training, you're nothing more than an outcast. Emme's mother is the assistant to President - no added pressure there. Emme has never cared for the system and it takes all she has to follow the rules, so she figures maybe she can make a change from the inside if she qualifies for management. She knows something isn't right and she's not sure who she can trust, but one thing is for sure. Nothing will stop Emme from protecting those she loves. Not even the government.

Required for class, but excellent read

I was afraid this was going to be another dry text book, but it is very engaging and well written. Full of examples that bring life to the topic and help the reader to retain the main ideas. Mostly about biases and decision traps and ways to avoid falling prey to them. Glad I read it and recommend it to everyone regardless of career.

Author does not acknowledge the past 20 years of research in judgement and decision making psychology.

Proposes ordinal scoring/weighting methods which have been proven to not only inaccurate but deceptive. (Hubbard, D., & Evans, D. (2010).

Proposes the elicitation of estimates from experts in the form of scores. Research has shown that experts who expressed 80% confidence that their estimates were true captured the truth only 49-65% of the time (Kahneman, Slovic, and Tversky, 1982; McBride, Fidler, & Burgman, 2012; McBride 2012,Onkal et al., 2003; Soll & Klayman, 2004; Speirs-Bridge et al., 2010).

Most of the text relies on the assumption that Kahneman and Tversky's conclusion that humans are poor estimators. In the academic community this assumption was proven false many years prior. Lopes pointed out that data was available which showed that people correctly estimated value and risk in gambling situations (Anderson & Shanteau 1970; Shanteau 1974; Tversky, 1967) and also in assessing the likelihood of fairly complex joint events occurring (Beach & Peterson 1966, Lopes 1976; Shuford 1959). In that research subjects produced the same probabilities produced by normative calculation using expected utility and compound probability multiplication. Neither of these mathematical methods was common knowledge among the subjects, but they produced equally correct answers. Research by Gigerenzer et al. found humans are more Bayesian thinkers and intuitive statisticians than the works of Kahneman et al. expressed, so long as information is communicated to experts in a frequency format (1995).

If this makes up the foundation of an MBA education, the result would presumably be confident managers who make poor decisions and worse, who do so without being aware of it.

About the Author
Barnes (Barney) W. McCormick is the Boeing Professor Emeritus at the Pennsylvania State University. He has a long history with the university, receiving his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the Department of Aeronautical Engineering. He returned to Penn State in 1959 and, in 1969, was named head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering. Later, he accepted a distinguished professorship as the Boeing Professor of Aerospace Engineering. In 1985, Dr. McCormick ventured into the corporate world, becoming Chief of Aerodynamics for Vertol (now Boeing Helicopters). He has served as consultant to many legal firms as well as industrial and government organizations, including a position as scientific consultant to the U.S. House of Representatives. Dr. McCormick served as Associate Editor for AIAA's Journal of Aircraft, and is an AIAA Fellow. In 1976, he was awarded the AIAA Educational Achievement Award for his innovative contributions to aerospace engineering education.
