Everything you need to know to pass the National Exam

I have worked in the mortgage industry for 10 years and as a Loan Officer for the last 5. I am licensed in multiple states but never took the National Exam as I earned all four of my licenses before it was introduced (I ended up paying four 4x SAFE tests, one for each state of licensure--very expensive!). This year I wanted to add a fifth state and needed to take the National Exam in order to do so. I did not want to pay hundreds of dollars through one of the online purveyors of LO training as I've been doing this long enough that it would be a waste of my time and money. What I did want was a refresher of applicable lending laws and guidelines. As any mortgage professional can attest, the content of government mandated tests doesn't have tremendous overlap with the daily tasks associated with writing mortgages.

Patricia O'Connor's eBook was exactly what I wanted and needed. Broken down by sections covering every area of the National Exam, all of the information was clear and well-presented. As a hint for others who have been in the industry a while: the first thing I did was take one of the two practice tests located at the back of the book (passed by the skin of my teeth with a 76%). I then took note of my wrong answers and broken them down into areas of greatest need and studied those chapters specifically. That approach worked very well. I passed the National Exam with a 107 / 115 for 93%, far in excess of the required 75%

What I liked best:
1) Chapters are laid out logically and progress from topic to topic in a seamless way
2) Each chapter concludes with a practice test
3) Each chapter also includes a summary of the main points of the chapter (these are very useful for study purposes)
4) The final exams were VERY similar to the actual National Exam I took
5) The book is FULL of hyperlinks to all applicable data sources for the content of the chapters; this book really is a dictionary for mortgage lending. The research that went into it was fantastic.

What could have used improvement:
1) The "key" for scoring the tests doesn't play nicely with my kindle--the last answer to each string of twenty five questions (25, 50, 75, 100, and 125) appeared on a different page than the rest of the answer which made scoring the practice tests a bit more of a chore than it already is
2) It would be really nice to have a web-link to an online practice test that would allow for faster test taking as scoring

I would not necessarily recommend this book to someone totally new to the industry looking to pass the National Exam for the first time. You may be better off taking a more comprehensive online or live class (at 15-20x the cost of this book!). That said, if you are already reasonably knowledgeable OR have very good study habits, you could absolutely pass the National Exam using only this book, especially if you take all the practice tests at the end of each chapter and the two final exams at the back of the book. If you can pass those, you can pass the national exam. This approach will require more from you, but its totally doable if you're dedicated and take notes as you read.

For my particular purposes, the book was perfect. I did find a few small typos, but they were very rare indeed and did not take away from the quality of the book as a whole. I will be recommending this one to my fellow LOs at my office and have no problem recommending it here on Amazon as well.

As the author states in the comments section of this review, this book IS NOT a replacement for the NMLS mandated 20-hour course for those applying for a license for the first time. My situation was a little unique, and I overlooked that bit of information.

Also, regarding the sole 1-star review of this book: I encountered NO questions with wrong answers in my reading of the book or in the practice tests I took. I would ignore any comments to the contrary.

Passed the exam the first time thanks to this book!!!

I took my 20 hour pre-licensing class in the beginning of January of this year and I bought this book soon after I finished the course. I just took the national exam yesterday for the first time and I passed!! I can honestly say I learned more from this book than I did from the 20 hour course and I know for a fact I could not have passed the first time without this book. I took my time and read it twice just to make sure I understood all of the information. I think learning all of the definitions from the links in the 9th chapter before reading the rest of the book would've been better and there are a couple typos so check your answers on the quizzes in the chapter because some will say your answer is wrong when you really have it right, but other than that this book was everything I had hoped for. This book helped me so much!! I would recommend this to anyone!

Get this book if you have failed the SAFE exam

I took the SAFE MLO exam twice (and failed) before I purchased Patricia O'Connor's MLO study guide. Just a bit of a background, I have no mortgage related experience whatsoever and i thought, after the 20 hour required course, I had a decent handle on the exam. I was wrong the first time when i scored a 73 and I was wrong the second time when I scored lower at a 70. I was dumbfounded. I studied incessantly for those tests, I rewrote the material, created flashcards, etc. Obviously it didn't work. I know now that I was not clearly understanding the different regulations, which is key. Patricia's study guide is written in a way that helped me get it, finally! I recommend this book only to those that have already completed the 20-hour coursework and score low on the practice exams. In addition to the book, I was constantly taking the practice exams from the course and I fidnt take the exam until I was consistently scoring an 80 or more on the practice test. My 3rd attempt was a victory, I scored an 84. Thank you Patricia!!!

A very informative and well written book.

This is the most complete book I've ever seen when it comes to the subject of evolution. The author writes with incredible detail and a mastery not often found when it comes to evolutionary biology.

A fascinatingly complete and accessible work

"Evolution" covers all of the possible topics with completion and accuracy. The work is made accessible to any reader through wide use of graphics to illustrate key concepts.The book is divided into four parts, each dealing with a different facet of evolutionary science: "The Organic Framework" concerns with the evolution of each of the five kingdoms of organisms; "The Psysical and Chemical Framework" focuses on the cellular level, dealing with the common chemical background and mechanisms of living creatures; "The Historical Framework" discusses the events leading up to Darwin's concept of evolution and further into our time; and, finally, "The Mechanisms", which reveals the workings of evolution on small-scale levels, such as gene frequencies and populations. Each of the book's chapters is further supported by an accompinying web site.

Useful for biology majors

Strickberger is famous in the genetical studies of Drosophila and his works primarily focus on phylogenetics and traditional genetic data interpretation.

In lieu of his speciality he has done a remarkable job composing this book as it makes a smooth, gradual transition from traditional evolutionary biology covering topics such as the endosymbiont theory, chemosynthetic origins of life, various theories of life and its formation to Linnean and Cladistic (anatomical and physiological classification) and finally into the real world with modern day molecular clock concepts and phylogenetic analysis.

Our focus in Biology 114 were all of these and the book was a fountain of knowledge in these regards. The field of study is generally boring, and I myself found this genre of biology to be more along the lines of some history class than a science subject.

On consideration of my negative bias of this whole topic, I still found this book to be remarkable. It had made a subject which I was not fond of (I didnt hate it but I didnt like it either) and made is refreshing. Strickberger's conversational style of writing and simplicity should by dually noted, the guy has a sense of humour what will make an individual crack up whilst reading his book. He is also highly informative and his explanations are not lost when reading as he joins ideas so coherently that it is hard to find gaps in the concepts he presents. This is by the way a book that ranges from explaining the history and philosophy of evolutionary biology, creationism vs evolution and how DNA fits in with respect to the three major biological domains.

The subject of Eukarya, Prokarya and Archia is discussed very well, a lot of focus is placed on the Eukaryotic paradigm of evolution since it is much more simpler to explain concepts with examples that an individual can associate with.

So unless you have a microbiology PhD or are microscopic yourself it is safe to say that Eukarya is most ideal :)

Strickberger has some philosophical differences to myself however I have learnt a significant amount from his text and found it useful in my further studies of Genetics at 200 (sophomore or second year) levels. How he explains electrophoresis is better than most analytical genetics textbooks, and this all packed in one cute package.

The bottom of the pages have this interesting lizard animation that when you flick the pages you see it move and eat a fly. I found that entertaining for the whole semester lol.

I didn't get to finish the entire book but I did complete about 80% of it. I'll say I started to attract a different type of guy and its been refreshing to say the least. This book has opened past wounds but allowed me to face them, heal them and move on. I'm dating a wonderful man someone who I probably wouldn't have picked but he's everything I need. Hopefully he is the one.
