About the Author

Jean Craighead George wrote over one hundred books for children and young adults. Her novel Julie of the Wolves won the Newbery Medal in 1973, and she received a 1960 Newbery Honor for My Side of the Mountain. She continued to write acclaimed picture books that celebrate the natural world. Her other books with Wendell Minor include The Wolves Are Back; Luck; Everglades; Arctic Son; Morning, Noon, and Night; and Galapagos George.

Listen to Your Mother!! Earth, that is!!

What a beautiful journey Billie Wind, the young Seminole girl, takes. Her modern beliefs and views put her at odds with the tribal elders, who ask her to choose her own punishment. She sarcastically suggests that she spend time alone in the Everglades, and is surprised when they agree. Billie's journey takes her to a fire that clears an island and forces her to take refuge in a pit - an ancient dwelling of Calusas. She begins to learn to understand what the animals and plants are telling her, through thier calls and movements. The birds show her where dry land is, the crickets and frogs let her know when a predator is near, the mangroves tell her when she nears the coast. The beautiful descriptions make the Florida environment come alive in this book. And as I listened to this book on tape with my two children, aged 8 and 11, we could also feel this connection that Billie makes with the land. My kids are eager to listen to this story at every chance we can get. I think they yearn for the self-sufficiency that Billie Wind develops in the story. The quietness of this story reflects the peace of nature. At a time when humans are more disconnected from the earth than ever before, this book is a call to turn off the TV, headphones, treadmill, radio, etc. and take a walk or kayak through the wetlands, listen to the birds, watch the grasses move. A book like this can remind us of the forces of nature, both terrible and peaceful. There is great drama and suspense in this story of a young girl finding her way in the natural world. The earth is talking to all of us, read this book, then come outside and try to hear what she is telling you.

The Talking Earth is about a Seminole girl named Billy Wind who is very curious. When her tribal elder spoke of spirits everywhere there is, Billie said she did not believe in that. The religious leaders got very angry and asked what punishment she should give herself. In sarcasm, she said that she should go to the pay-hay-okee (the Everglades)and stay until she heard the spirits of the animals talk, see the magical serpent, and find the little people who lived under the ground. The people agreed while she wondered in shock because it was just a joke. She was still forced to enter the pay-hay-okee and hear the spirits herself. Therefore, she stayed there and lived with an otter, a panther, and a turtle. At the end, she endured a hurricane in a cavern and lived to tell the tale.
The reason I liked this book is because it had a lot to do with the flow of nature. It told about why the Seminoles said there were animal gods and magical things. It also said how nature has its own special type of flow and to disrupt it can result in disaster. It also had a lot of feeling into what happenned around her and why it happenned.
I also liked the book because it was very interesting. I couldn't stop reading it until I had no other choice. It grabbed me in the ears and pulled me into the book with all my senses so that I could feel everything around me. In the tense parts, I was scared for Billy Wind and I was also relieved when that part was over. It was like real life!
My favorite part was when Billy wind had just entered the pa-hay-okee. There was a great fire that burned down the whole forest that she was in. She found a strange pit that seemed to be inhabitted before. She found a baby otter inside a small tunnel and named him Petang. She also noticed there were small artifacts in the walls that were related to the Seminole's. She stayed and tried to reach home and get an archeologist to the site.

Talking Earth is a very exciting book to read. The main character, Billie Wind, is a doubter of her tribe's beliefs and has to be punished. For her punishment, she chose to go to the Everglades to learn about her tribe's beliefs. There, Billie makes friends like Petang, the otter, Coootchobee, a panther, and Burden, a turtle. How will Billie Wind survive in the dangerous Everglades? Will she survive? Read the book to find out.
Billie Wind developed from the beginning of the book to the end. In the beginning of the book Billie Wind didn't care about her tribe's traditions. As time went by, though, she started to use the traditions to survive. At the end of the book, Billie tried to make Oats Tiger (now known as Hurricane Tiger) believe in the traditions. Billie Wind has learned much from her punishment and is using it to teach others.

This book is life changing as Warren delved into the heart of the final gospel as given by God to the apostle Paul. It is highly recommended reading for those hungry hearts wanting to know and grow in their walk in Christ. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book which also makes for a great Bible study tool for ongoing believers.

Everything I need for my job serach is in this nice little book. Advice from employers, and even video interviews on the website have helped me prepare for my own interviews. This book was fun to read. And, I'm sure that Getting Hired is the reason I got hired!

About the Author

FREDERICK VETTESE is the Chief Actuary of Morneau Shepell, one of the largest human resources consulting and technology companies and one of the top five defined benefit pension plan providers in North America. Fred has spent his entire career providing retirement consulting and actuarial services in respect of workplace pension plans. Much of his professional time these days is spent in the public eye, speaking at professional conferences and writing on retirement issues for the national newspapers and other media. In his spare time, Fred struggles enthusiastically with both his golf game and his piano. He was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, where he continues to reside with his wife Michelle.

The Essential Retirement Guide is Fred's second book. In 2012, Bill Morneau and Fred co-authored The Real Retirement, a book that explained why Canada was not suffering a retirement crisis. Fred can be reached at fvettese@morneaushepell.com.

A Sensible, Modern Approach

The words sensible, logical and easy-to-read come to mind when writing about this book. I'm not sure the writer covers new territory, but that would be hard to do and the book is modern and new. The combination of Vettese's actuarial background with excellent writing skills is what makes this book worthwhile. We know that whatever he says, he is on solid statistical ground. And whether you agree or not, he makes a decent argument for annuities. Another review suggested that Vettese's stock market views were somewhat rose-colored by the bull market of the late 20th century. But In Chapter 13, he most sensibly writes " It would be reasonable to think that the capital markets in the next 30 years will behave more or less the same way as they have for the past 75 years. There will be economic boom times and recessions, bull markets and bear markets....." It's difficult to argue with that. A first rate book to help you with your plans and retirement strategy

It was refreshing to read such an pragmatic breakdown of the retirement spending and accumulation process. Speaking from experience, if you follow the standard formulas used by the financial industry, you can never save enough. It should come as good news that the industry may be wrong in the author's opinion. Like he says, nothing is certain in this business but there is plenty of data in the book to support his conclusions. Bottom line is that you may not need to accumulate as much as you've been told. There has to be a balance between living and saving.

The Long Term Care Insurance analysis should prove very enlightening for anyone considering this coverage. The book may be a little heavy on the numbers for those who not statistics geeks but if you skip to the conclusions you are likely to improve your financial life in my opinion.

A very interesting, well-written book that will tell you a lot of things about retirement that you won't hear anywhere else. But, unlike a lot of retirement planning books which rely on rules of thumb and might make you panic about not saving enough, The Essential Retirement Guide is based on the best academic research and have a very different story to tell. Unconditionally, the BEST Hebrew book for self-teaching

I can't rate this book highly enough. I had looked at several different Hebrew books to try to teach myself Biblical Hebrew. Each book started off with teaching you the names of the letters and so on. This book doesn't bog you down with technicalities to start with. It launches you right into learning to read Hebrew.
For example, in the first chapter you are introduced to three letters. You are taught the sounds and some vowels. It is very simple, yet you learn quickly and find that you are actually reading real Hebrew words by the end of the first chapter! That is so encouraging when you're just starting out.
I have seen Hebrew language books that don't even teach you how to write the Hebrew by hand, which is much different than the formal typed Hebrew. This is necessary, and this book also includes directions on how to write the letters. Exercises are varied and comprehensive and include writing, reading, creating words, adding vowels, etc. There's even some humor in a few of the exercises.
The back cover of the book folds out to include charts that will help, too.
From this 92-page book, I taught myself to read Hebrew. I recommend it above all the others you may find here. It's also one of the least expensive. Additionally, you can also purchase tapes from EKS Publishing. They have many more Hebrew books for when you have mastered this one. This is the one to get.

It is a mitzvah!

I am teaching myself Hebrew and was looking for a few good books to help with this goal. Well, the reviews for this book were positive so, I ordered it.

Boy, I am so glad that I did too! First of all the book is very compact so, it is easy to take with you. It can fit into a handbag or briefcase with ease. There is a handy chart in the back for letter recognition. It even shows it with block print. This is the style that is considered handwritten. Nobody can write the letters that are in books. This was the only style that I saw and I tried to copy the book texts. It makes all the letters with curls, and wavy lines extremely difficult to write. This book changes that around!

In lesson 1, I was introduced to 3 letters. That is it, three! But what they did with those three letters are amazing. They introduced a vowel and it had the same sound. So, you are only learning one vowel every couple of lessons. It allows you to get comfortable with a couple of letters when combined with a vowel. I was reading and performing the exercises all in the first lesson! Unbelievable!

I like the exercises because they are self checking. Meaning, the words when pronounced correctly sound like real English words. This is encouraging to hear yourself reading. They do this purely for the exercises the words mean very different things in Hebrew. However, if you really doubt yourself, the answers are in the back. Of course, they are in Hebrew so, if you had problems with the exercises, this will not make it any easier for you. You will learn better, if you do not have the security net of the answers in the back of the book.

In the following lessons, they keep building upon the skills that you have learned in previous lessons. It is not isolating the lessons like most texts tend to do and they even review the lessons with you. They only introduce a few letters at a time which makes it really a lot more fun.

I was finally able to see what to do with Alef. It turns out that it really is a silent letter unless there is a vowel under it. It is what the books have been showing all this time. Who knew?

I wanted to teach my son Hebrew using this book but it would need modifications made to it. This is for adults who are self-disciplined enough to put their efforts into it. I think it is a great way to introduce vowels and this I will be doing with my son. However, this book is not to substitute for teaching or learning letter recognition. This does make a nice review for it. They do compare similar letters and how to tell them apart. This is extremely helpful for little ones who are having a hard time with letter recognition.

I know that there is a cassette companion for this book. However, I have just the book and I think that it is enough for me. Enjoy! You will not be sorry!

Christian OT Students Please Take Note

Easily the best text out there for novice students of general Hebrew. The Christian seminarian and prospective Tanakh ("Old" Testament) scholar who purchases this book as preparation for more advanced study will benefit tremendously. However, do keep in mind that your seminary or university texts will probably NOT use the modern Sephardic pronunciation that this book employs. Sephardic has a considerably simplified phonetic scheme,useful for learners of spoken and ceremonial Hebrew, in which a number of the vowels and consonants have identical sounds.

The Masoretic Text generally studied in Christian seminaries was attempting to transcribe a now archaic pronunciation in which each letter and pointing has its own sound, including subtle variations when the dagesh is absent. This by no means compromises the usefulness of this introductory book, but the novice Hebrew scholar should be aware that things get more precise on the academic level. Folks unfamiliar with Semitic languages will find Masoretic Hebrew sounds more challenging. Still, this book serves well as a gateway to an endlessly fascinating language.

A formidable parable on our inabiliy or unwillingness to submit to realities

Is Houellebecq getting moderate? Given the hype prior to the release of this book in connection with the events in Paris, I would have expected a much more controversial story. But most of the book is essentially an intellectual reflection on the literary opus of a rather unknown author of a gone century, sometimes quite lengthy. I am still rating the book with a five star, because like no other famous author he reminds us of prevalent prejudices, stereotypes, and hidden fears - and the inability of societies in Europe to deal with them.
