This geography is filled with current information. The vocabulary is precise; unlike some textbooks where you have to search for the meaning, this book does a great job of having the vocab in bold letters and explaining what the vocab word means. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about Geography.

When I first started as a runner in a studio almost 30 years ago, I was sat down by the Chief Engineer and told that the most vital thing to understand and remember is that music production is 95% psychology and 5% technology. I was lucky to have started in the old system where if you wanted to be a music producer you did an apprenticeship in a recording studio shadowing established producers and you learnt as you went along. If you were lucky you got to observe some of the greats of music and production create masterpieces that stood the test of time. I was extremely lucky!

My career has taken me from Ireland, the UK, around Europe, USA and to Australia. I have met and collaborated with some of the greats in music production and artists. Some of the ones I am most proud of are U2, Def Leppard (Hysteria album, Depeche Mode (Violator Album), Black Sabbath, Yes and many more. Since 2002 I have been a tutor at BIMM (Brighton Institute of Modern Music) and have developed a real passion for music education, especially as the opportunities that I had, are not their any more.

Good theoretical overview but left a lot to be desired

There's a lot of good content here but it was pretty bland and uninteresting. It's not a long read but it was hard to want to finish it all and I am someone genuinely interested in music production.

The best book about tee vee that I have ever read

I have read a good many books about television and its history, but this is, far and away, the best of the lot. I do not always agree with Mr. Ellison's opinions, but this man can write with the best of them and everything in here is worth reading and mulling over. I am a little young to have been a part of the civil rights/anti-Viet Nam era, but everything here coincides with my recollections of this time as a youthful bystander. You might not remember many of the shows about which he wrote. Most of them are forgotten, and with good reason. Here, it doesn't matter at all. Ellison writes about so much more just tee vee that, ultimately, America's portrait is reduced to a 21" tee vee screen. Scary, enlightening, entertaining and often roll around on the floor rolling your head off funny. He wrote a companion volume called "The Other Glass Teat," which consisted of later columns from the Los Angeles Freep and a few from the paper that picked up the column after the Freep dropped him. Not as good as this, but still excellent writing. Perhaps the best stories are those of when he went to speak at a high school in the ghetto and had a kid tell him off and the other of when he was a tryout contestant on the pilot of "The Dating Game." The first tells us more about America at that time than all the self-righteous academic nonsense ever published; the second is uproariously funny and also tells us a great deal about how vacuous we can be. What can I say? Get it. Read it. Think about it. I have recommended this book to friends many times with the guarantee that if they did not like it, I would buy it from them at cover price. I still have only my original copy of this gem.

Great as either a historical document or a modern criticism

Written in 1971 when television was even worse than it is now (mostly because there were less channels so that one good show out of a thousand was even harder to find) Harlan Ellison's columns for the Free Press were some of the most dead-on impressions of televions - the business, the message, the medium - ever. From political commentaries to the muted lives of television executives and their "helpful suggestions" to youth-oriented programming, Ellison took no prisoners and never let up on his criticism of an industry that made him prosperous. For anyone whose ever seen him on Politically Incorrect telling a conservative radio host to shove it and cheered this is one of those books that you just need to read.
This is the second book of columns and the only one that I read. Highlights include a discussion on a new fuel additive that was supposed to save the environment but didn't really do much, a disgusted commentary of children's beauty pagents (which were televised at the time), criticism of the new television series (dismissal of The Mod Squad as an overreaching appeal to youth market, praise of All in the Family, praise of a bunch of shows that never lasted, attacks on more shows that also died out), vivisection of the treatment for a case worker show, and discussion of The Young Lawyers complete with a full screenplay and a couple of columns about getting it on the air and then hating the final product. The most hilarious one would have to be his story of being a contestant on the Dating Game and promising the poor woman that as bachelor # 3 his perfect date would be to go to the landfill and shoot rats.
Sometimes the criticism gets to be too much and you wonder if there is anything that Harlan Ellison likes. Sometimes he's a little too blinded by his own sense of right and wrong to give anyone else a chance. But at heart this is a man who still has a capacity to be disappointed in the human race and what the human race puts up as entertainment. While reading Ellison gives you the feeling of reading a Pit Bull's memoirs, you can't dismiss him.
The only caveat is that his script sucks. Maybe it was just the time and the restrictions that he worked in, but this is the man who did the quintessential Star Trek and whose original script still surpassed the television version. But it's one of those lawyer having trouble adjusting to his ex-girlfriend's drug habit and user-ways. It seemed to be a waste of pages, and even though the televised version was much worse, the stuff that he was upset about being cut - wasn't that great. It was better than most television scripts but that's not saying much.
And if upon reading this book you want to shoot your television, Mr. Ellison has succeeded. However, remember that there is the happy ending of Ellison being the consultant for Babylon 5 - a show that never compromised to the networks and became the greatest science fiction series of all time (unless of course you note that it's spinoff Crusade also never compromised and got cancelled by TNT and is still in Limbo). After reading this book you might want to read J. Michael Straczynski's book on screenwriting which gives a slightly less disgusted view of television.

classic anti-nostolgia

See why Laugh-In was, in truth, an example of proto-Republican mind-molding and why all the true freaks watched the Smothers Brothers instead!. (My copy came from Half-Price books, Austin, TX, and supposedly there is a companion volume called The Other Glass Teat, one that is REALLY hard to find and one that I would be very grateful to read.)

We finally get more Tyler and Meredith!!!! This book was great. I love Laramie Briscoe's books because she covers much more than the fantasy of a motocycle club. We see the real struggles coiples go through. Anger. Hurt. Love. It's beautiful because it's life. Pick up all of these books. You won't regret it!

Strong families, love and loss and growing into who you were meant to be =)

You all wanted more Tyler and Meredith...ask and you shall get what you want...and this one is chock full of romance, family love and some unexpected drama that turns violent.
When we last saw this couple, they had taken in a baby to love and keep as their own and this book begins with the adoption being finalized. There is always a fear that you will come to love a child deeply and then have them snatched away by the birth parents...but so far there had been no sign of anyone and their dream of having an HEA with Addie is finally coming true.
Meanwhile, the "kids" and their angsty drama is taking over everyone's lives...the twins Drew and Mandy each have their sites set on someone and their young ages doesn't stop the fact that sexual feelings and activities are inevitable. Drew is in teen heaven and lust with Charity, a stripper's daughter and Mandy is secretly crushing and debating "giving it all" to her brother's BFF Dalton. It was an interesting and fun dynamic when all the MC dads weigh in with their opinions and advice (Liam the one married to their mom and Tyler, the one Drew confides in) and I am looking forward to the next book which will cover Drew and Charity when they have aged a few years.
The other main focus of this book is on the struggle of Tyler and Meredith to deal with the issues stemming from their troubles to conceive a child of their own. Meredith has already had to overcome the trauma of her rape which will stay with her their whole lives, but giving Tyler a child of his own has so far been out of her reach and it was a really sweet but tense time as Tyler does his best to keep her happy and protect his new family.
Of course no biker book would be complete without some mysterious and troubling woman to enter the picture, and Stephanie (a new arrival to the CRISES home) is just that person. She has a grudge of some sort against Meredith, is doing illegal activites in the center and causes some major damage that threatens the MC family big time.
I really enjoyed the sensitive and more serious change of pace of this book...family, love and loss, and growing into who you are meant to be all figure prominently in this newest Heaven Hill entry. We get a more up close and personal look at the "family life" of the key members of the club...their children, their relationship struggles and how parenthood affects each in different and profound ways.
I highly recommend to anyone who has read the previous books in the series and would like a sweet story with some HEA endings and some "for now" promises as well.

I was given an ARC of Beginning of Forever by the wonderful Laramie Briscoe. I’ve followed this series since book 3 was released. Here we are on book 7 and I fall more in love with the men and women of the Heaven Hill series each time. Beginning of Forever is Tyler and Meredith’s second book and let me tell you, Ms. Briscoe did not disappoint. Their journey is an incredible one. From the moment they met in their first book to the end of their second, their relationship is filled with passion, compassion, love, understanding and true friendship. We get to visit the other couples and see a little of what is going on in their lives. In addition, Mandy and Drew take a more active role in this book, allowing a glimpse into their lives. The entire series is written in such a manner that the characters easily come alive. Take this ride with them. It’s well worth it. I look forward to the next adventure with the Heaven Hill MC.

Delightful, insightful & a pleasure to read

What if your wedding was just a few days away, and a secret from your past suddenly reappears? Just a little sin of omission, something you forgot to tell anyone? This is what happens to Milly, when her wedding photographer is the same person who took casual photos of her as a bride ten years ago, a wedding that she never told anyone about. This was a marriage of convenience with a virtual stranger, and when Milly lost contact with the groom, she decided she could push the entire event far enough out of her mind to make it never exist.

Milly's secret does get told, and she ends up in a maelstrom of hurt feelings and confusion, staring with her fiancée, Simon. The only son of a self-made wealthy man, Simon struggles with inadequacy and was determined to do one thing better than his father--have the perfect wedding. Milly's mother has been frantically planning the wedding, with much vicarious pleasure in Milly's wealthy future. Meanwhile, Milly's Dad is struggling with a mid-life crisis and her sister Isobel is facing a life changing decision of her own.

In parallel to Milly's personal challenges, she sets off to find her first husband and secure a divorce. This sub-plot adds an entirely different element to The Wedding Girl (no spoiler here!), and adds valuable elements to the story and to development of the characters.

The Wedding Girl is a delightful story with a good mix of happy and sad that will cause the reader to think and enjoy. I always enjoy books by Madeline Wickham aka Sophie Kinsella, and The Wedding Girl reminds me why I look forward to each one being released in the USA.

Udo Schüklenkholds the Ontario Research Chair in Bioethics and Public Policy at Queen's University at Kingston in Canada. He is a Joint Editor-in-Chief of Bioethics, the journal of the International Association of Bioethics. He is the author, co-author or editor of 160 contributions in journals and anthologies and 7 books including 50 Voices of Disbelief: Why We Are Atheists 2009), The Bioethics Reader (2007) and 50 Great Myths About Atheism (2013).

Peter Singer is Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University and Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne. He is the author, co-author, or editor of more than 40 books, including Animal Liberation (first published in 1975), widely credited with triggering the modern animal-rights movement, Practical Ethics (third edition, 2011), In Defense of Animals: The Second Wave (2005), and The Life You Can Save (2009). Silly Soap Opera

Wow, this is a bad book. It is very, very predictable. The writing is juvenile and vulgar. The two-dimensional characters and the plot are preposterous. I kept reading it simply because of so many favorable reviews (what book did they read?) and because I couldn’t believe it was all so obvious; surely the author had a surprise or two up her sleeve. No, the only surprises were how more and more vulgar it became (especially in its name-calling of women) and how sexually explicit it became as I went further into the book.

The plot, if you can call it that, relies on the reader accepting the possibility that various friends/family/lovers don’t suspect that a woman is not who they think she is. She has been in an accident, and her face is swollen and bruised. For weeks? Really? And still, so what? Wouldn’t you know your own mother even if her face were completely covered? Her voice, her hands, her fingernails, her moles, her freckles, her footsteps, her speech patterns, her likes, her dislikes, the way she holds a cup, the way she sneezes?

These folks are idiots, but it is somewhat explicable in that the author seems to regard women merely as sex objects, so one female body is the same as any other (seriously, that actually occurs in this book). We read again and again about how hot and sexy the various women are and how every man is dying to jump on them. Sadly, the women themselves don’t seem to have any thoughts, life or purpose other than money and sex.

And the writing! It’s painful. Exactly how does someone pulverize chewing gum? How does someone hitch their jaw west or hitch their way across a floor? And then there are the awkward on-and-off dialects for the “lower classes:”
“Ye-up, as well as can be ‘spected,” Old said. “I’ve got him with me and he’s purty good, jes’ keeps looking down the lane fer ya.”
Or how about:
“I’ve been with others who ain’t as sweet as yer little James.”
And:
“These pricks are just messin’ with yer mind, baby.”

Well, this book is no longer messin’ with mah mind. I am done with it, baby.

It was like I started watching a movie in the middle

I started this book and kept trying to get into the story, but just couldn't connect with the story or the characters. It was like I started watching a movie in the middle. There was no explanation of the characters or their back story after the "plot" seemed to be established. The characters seemed to be one-dimensional and I had no idea what was going on, who "belonged" to who in the story, which was also extremely vague. All in all, I read about 1/4 of the book and gave up.

Suspenseful

If you like suspense and a story that will make you jump at creaky sounds, go for it. A well written book with well developed characters and a twisty plot line and a nasty villain you will love to hate. The author skillfully presented the depths some people can sink into evil to achieve their desires. Set in my favorite city so I was familiar with most of the places mentioned.
