Peter Craigie demonstrates in this commentary that the biblical psalms express "the most profound of human feelings and insights-prayer, praise, liturgy, wisdom and lament." Through careful analysis of language and form, he communicates both the emotional and theological impact of the psalms as originally experienced by the people of Israel at public worship and in private devotions.
Professor Craigie's translations and interpretations of each of the first fifty psalms apply insights into the Hebrew language and Israel's literature drawn from Ugaritic texts. He provides a careful and critical analysis of various controversial proposals based on these sources for understanding the early substance and later form of the Psalter.
This revision of WBC 19 by Marvin Tate preserves all of Professor Craigie's original exposition and augments it with an extensive supplement that updates the bibliographies and documents the explosive growth in Psalm studies in the last two decades of the twentieth century. Professor Tate's comprehensive additions survey and evaluate new trends in the scholarship on:
- Hebrew Poetry
- Psalms Exegesis
- The Nature of the Psalter
The psalms are central parts of the worshiping life of Jewish and Christian communities, and are the roots of the musical heritage of both traditions. Dr. Craigie's and Dr. Tate's careful analyses will give the reader a new appreciation of the reality that life and faith, history and liturgy, and struggle and prayer are inseparable in the life of the people of God.

My Favorite Psalms Commentary
By R. Stander
Of the 3 volumes Word has produced on the Psalms, Craigie's is my favorite. He seemed to hit the ground in more practical interpretations than Tate or Allen who finished the series after Craigie's untimely death in 1985. I agree that WBC's commentaries are generally mid-upper level academic works, and yet Craigie balances wonderful theological commentary with approachable and insightful language for both pastor and scholar. I would highly recommend Craigie's work to be used along side of several others.

Great for the scholar and the layperson
By Doug Erlandson
The commentary by Peter Craigie on the first 50 Psalms is a worthy effort, to say the least. The introductory material (which is intended as an introduction to the book of Psalms as a whole), although not extremely long, contains valuable information on issues such as the origin of Psalmody in Israel, the compilation of the Psalter, the titles of the Psalms, the issue of authorship, the nature of Hebrew poetry and music, as well as other issues of interest. While I wouldn't go so far as to say that the introduction alone is worth the price of the book, it comes close.
Craigie goes on to discuss each Psalm in turn. As is typical of the entire Word Biblical Commentary series, the commentary on each Psalm begins with a translation, followed by notes on that translation, then a section on "form/structure/setting," and finally sections commenting on the individual verses themselves and an explanation of the entire Psalm. While there is a significant amount of material in Craigie's discussion of each of the Psalms that will be of most relevance to the scholar (particularly one with a working knowledge of Hebrew), there is also much of value to pastors and laypersons who want to gain insight into the devotional value of the Psalms. Reading Craigie's comments on each of the first 50 Psalms will give one a greater appreciation of the message of these songs of the Israelites.

Word Biblical Commentary: Psalms 1-50
By Danielle M. Kahut
Word Biblical commentary is a great semi-advanced treatment of the various books in the bible. There are many good word studies found, few grammatical observations, and though the authors include theological significance, the conclusions are not particularly profound. Great introduction to each psalm as the original, compositional, anthological and ritual settings are identified and other commentaries with discussions in these areas are referred to though not fully summarized.
