The Many Rides Of Paul Revere, by James Cross Giblin, James Giblin

Sibert Medalist James Cross Giblin takes readers on a wild and fascinating ride through the American Revolution.

Paul Revere is commonly remembered in the Longfellow legend of his Midnight Ride before the 1775 Battles of Lexington and Concord. In this bright, informative biography, Giblin follows Revere's life from his humble beginnings as a French immigrant's son to his work as a silversmith and a horse messenger amid the mounting pressures of revolution. In precise, accessible prose, Giblin chronicles Revere's daring acts -- both the famous and the overlooked. Along the way, he portrays a brave, compassionate, multitalented American patriot.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Giblin's attractive, large-format book sets the record straight on Paul Revere's life and his role in the American Revolution. Beginning with his father's journey to America, this well-organized biography presents a lucid account of Revere's childhood, his limited education, his training in his father's workshop, his brief military career, and his adult life as a silversmith, family man, and Revolutionary War leader. In that role, he made not one, but many rides to deliver important messages. In creating his portrait of Revere, Giblin presents salient facts and intriguing details to create a well-rounded and credible image of the man. Among the many illustrations are period portraits, narrative paintings, engravings, drawings, and maps as well as photos of significant sites and artifacts. Appendixes include a time line and annotated lists of books, Internet sites, and historic sites to visit. Unlike some biographies of Revere, this one does not relate (only to refute) certain legendary "facts," though it does note the ways in which the historical record contradicts the famous poem "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere," which is reprinted here. Giblin notes that Longfellow, in attempting to create an American hero rather than to write an accurate history, "more than achieved his goal." That's a gracious concession from a writer who has taken the latter path here, and with notable success. Phelan, Carolyn

Paul Revere for School Age Children
By FredTownWard
It was while reading The Revolutionary Paul Revere that I noticed this book at a grade school Scholastic book sale. Curious what they were teaching kids today about Paul Revere, I decided to take a chance on it, and I'm glad that I did.

IMHO The Many Rides Of Paul Revere is a remarkably well written (and well chosen) condensation of the material available in Paul Revere and the World He Lived In or Paul Revere's Ride (and for that matter the above book which is largely based on these two as well). It even includes Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous (if somewhat inaccurate) poem and a short guide to associated historical sites preserved in and around Boston.

I am strongly tempted now to seek out the author's other similar picture book biographies: George Washington: A Picture Book Biography, Thomas Jefferson: A Picture Book Biography, and The Amazing Life of Benjamin Franklin.

Excellence in Historical Writing
By LME
This is just about the best book I have ever read on the launching of the American Revolution. Through the pages we learn of the religious persecution that caused Paul Reveres' family to consider a new life for him in America. Following that we learn of education, apprentices, and craftsmen in the colonies. After a light primer on silver-smithing, we move on to a simple but meaningful explanation of the wars involving the Indians caught between the French and British empires.

After touching on the presence of Freemasonry (the Masons) in the colonies, the various odious taxes are shown to be the result of British debts from the French and Indian Wars. We have only finished page 16 of this terrific book and already possess a very clear understanding of the influences shaping the future United States. The book continues in this vein. It is not scholarly or dry, quite the opposite. In simple but effective language the story is vividly related and Paul Revere is shown to be an extraordinary man.

This book is written for ages 8 to 80. It would make a fine read-aloud as well.

I have read two other books by James Cross Giblin (one was about the Rosetta Stone) and found him to be a very worthwhile author. After reading The Many Rides of Paul Revere I now proclaim him to be an excellent author.

Nice, long biography
By M. Heiss
Not only is this an excellent and comprehensive biography, but it looks particularly at the events leading up to the Revolution.

It includes the text of Longfellow's "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" at the back. Great time line, GREAT index, and -- get this, Moms -- a WALKING MAP of Boston to see the sites mentioned in the book. Blow me away!

Tons of illustrations.
