Dr. David DeLong is an expert on how to conduct successful job searches in a market that has changed dramatically since the Great Recession. A former case writer for Harvard Business School’s MBA career planning course, he is a strategist, speaker, and workshop leader, specializing in the skills needed to thrive in today’s changing workplace. Author of “Lost Knowledge: Confronting the Threat of an Aging Workforce,” David is a nationally recognized expert on solutions for closing the STEM skills gap. His is also co-author of “The Executive Guide to High-Impact Talent Management.” He is president of David DeLong & Associates and a research fellow at the MIT AgeLab.

Great gift for graduates

As soon as I saw the title of this book, "Graduate to a Great Job: Make Your College Degree Pay Off in Today's Market," I knew it would make the perfect graduation gift for each of the graduates on my gift list. Now that I have read the book myself, I realize it would also be an ideal gift for the parents of a soon-to-be graduate. Finally, when I examined the credentials of the author -- an expert in the skills needed to succeed in a changing workplace -- I decided that not only would this book be a great gift for graduates and a much-needed resource for parents, but also would be useful for those job seekers long out of college and looking to reenter the workforce or pursue a new career direction. The real-life stories that unfold in each chapter make the book quite personal and the checklists for action at the end of each chapter are effective and practical. Dr. DeLong's style is easy-to-read and conversational, his advice is informative, and his words inspiring. Buy three copies...one for the graduate, one for the graduate's parents, and one for yourself!

Concise advice for preparing for the post-college job search

If you are a recent college graduate, this book is a great starting point for your post-graduation job search. It lays out all the basic advice -- networking, resumes, cover letters, etc. -- and it's a pretty quick read. You can probably skim it in between your classes. Another thing I like about the book is the stories about 30 successful college graduates. It's one thing to evaluate career advice in a vacuum, but it's another thing to see it confirmed in real-world examples. As other reviewers have mentioned, the chapter about ATS resumes is very informative as well. Overall, this book is comprehensive in its subject matter and very concise in its style.
Put simply, if you expect to succeed in any competition, you need to understand the rules of the game. This book lays out the rules for the job-hunting game, from networking to LinkedIn etiquette. I would recommend it to any college student or recent graduate who is facing the uncertain job market.
